Project Overview
We recently completed the refurbishment of a three-bay outdoor cricket practice facility in Teesside, transforming a tired and uneven surface into a professional-quality training environment. This project is a great example of how we approach sports surface refurbishments, combining technical accuracy, durable materials, and practical design for everyday use.
The client’s existing practice area had become worn, uneven, and difficult to maintain. Drainage issues and surface deterioration were affecting performance and safety, so a full refurbishment was the most cost-effective way to bring it back to standard.
Preparation and Groundworks
Our first step was to strip back the existing surface to reach the sub-base. Once exposed, we thoroughly re-levelled and compacted the base layer, ensuring a consistent gradient and stable foundation, essential for maintaining the lifespan of any artificial cricket pitch or sports surface.
We also checked the integrity of the existing base materials, replacing any weakened sections to prevent future movement. This groundwork forms the backbone of every installation we deliver, especially for high-use outdoor sports areas like cricket practice nets and multi use games areas (MUGAs).
Surface Installation
Once the sub-base was sound, we installed new shock pads to provide an additional layer of safety and comfort. Shock absorption is particularly important in artificial cricket pitches, where repeated impacts from bowling and fielding can cause surface fatigue over time.
The playing area was then fitted with NottsGrass NG Ultra Premier, a high-performance artificial surface that delivers realistic ball bounce and pace. This surface is well-known across the UK for its consistency and low maintenance requirements, making it a popular choice for school sports surfaces, clubs, and coaching environments.
To further support player development, we integrated coaching lines into each bay, allowing coaches to set up drills and training sessions with clear visual guidance.
Finishing Details
The project was finished with new perimeter netting to contain balls safely within the area and a rodent skirt to protect the base structure from long-term damage. These small details are easy to overlook, but they make a big difference to the durability and usability of the facility.
As part of our installation process, we also carried out a final inspection of the full practice area, checking seam strength, base compaction, and run-up consistency to ensure the surface met professional standards.

The completed facility is now a reliable and professional-standard outdoor cricket practice area suitable for both junior and senior players. The NottsGrass NG Ultra Premier surface provides true and predictable ball behaviour, while the re-levelled sub-base ensures a stable and even finish.
